Be My Baguette, I’ll Be Your Curry

Cumin, coriander, fennel, turmeric. When they gather it’s like a meeting of old friends or a tight-knit family. You just know you’ll have yourself a warm, enjoyable time when they’re all there together. And of course, it’s even warmer and all the more enjoyable when shared with friends and family.

So for the last potluck, I brought along a chicken and pumpkin curry. Less spicy and more sweet than the usual curries, so everyone (well, almost everyone) can still enjoy it without killing the taste of everything else.

Oops. Forgot to mention I threw in a few cloves, a couple of star anise, and a stick of cinnamon as well :P

On a side note, not everything needs to be similar to get along well. Baguettes and curries, spaghetti and sambal, stew, chrysanthemum tea, pavlova – they may all hail from different cultures, have different histories, and are of different colours, but put them all on the same table and it still makes for a wonderful meal.

Life should really be just one big potluck, don’t you think?

P/S: A healthy and blessed Ramadhan to all my Muslim friends

  1. Love the title + intro to the post. I’ve always admire the way you look at things. Which I’ve had your eyes for details and your observant skills. It’s like you’ve got a macro lens stuck on ya. :)

“Baguettes and curries, spaghetti and sambal, stew, chrysanthemum tea, pavlova – they may all hail from different cultures, have different histories, and are of different colours, but put them all on the same table and it still makes for a wonderful meal.” How very 1Malaysia of you :)

Aww shucks. Thanks for the kind words! And I think you mean a macro lens with rose-tinted filter on top. Hehe.

But sorry, I’m gonna have to deny the sloganeering. I believe in being Malaysian, rather than being 1Malaysian :P

It’s nice to be featured in your blog, even if it’s a half face pic. lol

That chicken and pumpkin curry was wicked. Can’t wait for another round of potluck where u cook and I bring nothing.

    • chiselstone says:

Lol. You’re meant to bring an appetite!

Oh and I try to preserve my friends’ anonymity mah, but that expression was just too priceless not to share, even if it was just a peek :P

  5. someone who looks at you from a distance says:

Sigh…a fella who can cook…melts my heart

OMG, *VERY x1000 LIKES* the denial of that stupid slogan. I loathe it. It’s the embodiment of the bandwagon-jumping (ie putting a number in front of everything), basi horse-flogging (ie see previous), shiok-sendiri (can you just imagine the man patting himself on the back for originating such a hip, profound nutshell) mentality that belies the lack of originality plaguing our cultural landscape. GAH!!! hatehatehatehate.

O, none of this vitriol is being directed at Jon of course. Just that damn pestilent slogan.
