Bakkut no Teh

Mention Klang, and a good portion of the Chinese population in Malaysia will think – Bak Kut Teh. Well, sure, Klang is practically the hometown of BKT but I doubt it’sthe only thing our friends, the Klangites, eat. There’s also good banana leaf rice and tong yuen to be found as well.

Oh, and according to a colleague who hails from that town, there’s also the bak kut p’ng (spare ribs with rice). I had the pleasure to finally get a taste of that a couple of months back, thanks to my cousin (who’s a true glutton, bless his heart… and his arteries).

I like to share my sins so I convinced some friends (me: eat pai kuat fan / fren: let’s go!) to make a little “road trip” to the distant (twenty-minute drive) town of Klang. Despite my lousy sense of direction, I managed to find the place quite easily (and without embarassment). We quite enjoyed our simple meal of Hakka Paikut (more of a fried pork chop in sweet soy sauce, nice but only so much one can swallow), meatballs (the best!), tofu and veg (mediocre and mediocre-er). We probably should have brought a bigger group so that we could have savoured all the other stuff like the assam fish and the curry.

Well, there’s always a next time!
